"Unemployed"

We are planning on building on an addition and I had to speak to a loan officer at a local bank. I got a little perturbed because she referred to me as "unemployed" during our conversation. Now I do realize I don't have a 9-5 job like she does, but I am not unemployed. At one point she asked how long I have been unemployed, I quickly answered, "I have been a stay-at-home-mom for four years." I don't know why it bothered me so much, but it did. She made it sound like I had no choice, but to quit my job and that couldn't be farthest from the truth. Staying at home to raise my babies is a blessing that God has enabled our family to do! Well, enough of my ranting (as I could go on and on) and on to the fun side of being home with my babies.

Since I stay at home, the girls and I went to the store on Monday and didn't buy much of anything, but enjoyed just getting out and looking around. Tuesday we made funnel cakes - yummy. I haven't made funnel cakes since elementary school and thought that they would be fun to make with my girls. Lillie absolutely loves them as Gracie does too! For those interested here the recipe I used:

1 1/4 cup flour
2 Tbsp sugar
1 tsp baking soda
3/4 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 egg
3/4 - 1 cup of milk

Sift dry ingredients together. Mix milk and egg and then add to dry ingredients and stir until smooth. Heat oil to 375 degrees. While plugging the end of the funnel with one finger, pour 1/4 cup of batter into funnel. Let batter pour into hot oil (moving funnel around in circles). Cook 2 minutes on each side, remove drain and then choose topping of your liking. I used powdered sugar and a cinn/sugar mix and mine.

Enjoy the funnel cakes!

  1. I know exactly what you mean! It's like we have no purpose. I feel very lucky to be a SAHM and despite the financial sacrifices it involves it's worth every penny! I have no idea when I will even go back to work. Maybe something part-time while the boys are in school, but I want to be there to see them off and when they return home. I want to be involved I had someone make a comment once that we must be rich for me to stay home! Hardly, but we make it work and I consider myself very lucky :)

  2. Sounds scrumptious! Very Susie Homemaker of you! Ha! Guess what I'm actually going to do this weekend?? Sew!!! I'm excited...someone gave me a pattern to review for my blog so I have to try it out and then write about it. Hopefully I can manage to make it look presentable!

  3. Funnel cakes sound yummy!! And, I do know what you mean about the unemployed remark. I get that sometimes...treated with pity or something, because there is an assumption that staying at home to raise my kids could not have been my first choice. There must have been something I would have rather done that just didn't work out or something. It is upsetting at the time, but then we get home and enjoy all those hugs from our babies and we get over it because our little ones matter so much more and make it all worth it.

    Thanks for the recipe!!

  4. Sarah, I completely understand your frustration. I have even found myself downplaying the role that I have in my family. Just somehow deeming it not as worthy of respect as doing something with my college degree. But you are right, being a stay-at-home-mom is a choice and a blessing given by God to raise and mold our little ones into God-fearing adults! Someone once told me that I am here to raise Godly men for their future wives, and that has stuck with me. Our job is very important, and it is far from the label of "unemployed."
